STEEL WHEELS

The Steel Wheels — Missing Piece Group

I had the pleasure of attending a Steel Wheels concert in the small-venue intimate setting of Swallow Hill Music.  Our daughter is friends with the primary fellows, having met two of them at undergraduate school at Eastern Mennonite University.   A third band member is the son of a fellow that I went to school with at Goshen College.

Trent Wagler is the front man for the band, and is a very talented singer, musician and song writer, and his bio can be found here. He has a distinctive sound that I like. Jay Lapp is the guitar and mandolin player and a bit of info about Jay can be found here.  The third primary member is fiddle player Eric Brubaker who writes here.

Their live performance was impressive in several ways from musicianship to clarity of delivery to song content.  I was very impressed with the variation in styles - way too often bands play a couple of songs and then they all begin to sound alike.  Not so with the Steel Wheels - a very enjoyable evening indeed.

Enjoy a concert!!

Notice one of the members is wearing a "pride" t-shirt. Thanks, but no thanks Steel Wheels.

You must have special vision; I don't see it and I don't think you see what you think you see.

The guy second from the right has a rainbow pride t-shirt that looks like the words "criminal record" on it.

I'm sure they're all wonderful musicians and entertainers. Why not just leave it at that rather than flaunt one's sexual preferences? Too big a distraction for my tastes.

There's lots of rainbow shirts that have nothing to do with sex. Methinks you're fixated 😄

The vast majority of people who see a rainbow on a shirt think of it as a symbol of gay pride. And since homosexual acts are a sin for the authentic Christian, those who advocate for such behavior are announcing to the world, “I am not a Christian.” So, why distract from a musical entertainment with that message? I suggest a more harmless distraction, big black letters on a white shirt that state "I Fart at the Dinner Table!"

However, the fart would likely be rainbow colored!! :-)

Dean, I think you’re WAY off base when it comes to deciding who is and isn’t a “true” Christian, especially when you introduce vulgarity into the discussion. Christianity has to do with what one believes about the divinity of Jesus, His death on the cross, the role of the Holy Spirit, and the transformation one experiences as a believer and practitioner. It is much more than one stupid shirt.

Dean channels the 1920's Mennoniie, while Steve channels the 2020's Mennonite.

Well Yodie, that explains that!!

In the 1920's my mom's mom made pretty, homemade dresses for my mom and her sisters. A fellow Mennonite church member complained, "They look like millionaire's daughters!" So, I guess that made it a sin of pride in his eyes. Lol!

The complainer might have used the word "dress" instead of "look" now that I come to think of it. "They DRESS like millionaire's daigjters."

Anyway, getting back to the point of the article, the background stories of the musicians, their musical stye and content, and their public performances are unique and interesting. Had not heard of the group before and appreciate the introduction and “cultural enlightenment.” I don’t listen to the radio much anymore (since Rush Limbaugh died) or watch TV, so am out of touch when it comes to popular entertainment. And my new Camry did not even come with a CD player, and none available as an option, which totally flabbergasted me. What’s an old fogey to do? So, thanks for enlarging my entertainment perspectives!

Cuz - got behind on all of this, but you speak much truth :-) And, glad to enlarge your entertainment perspective!
