ONE OF JERRY COYNE'S READERS

As one of the 61,000+ readers of Jerry Coyne's Why Evolution is True website, I decided to accept his invitation to participate in his Photos of Readers series.  Here is the post, and original found here:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do send in a photo or two of yourself doing something interesting or characteristic of your life. We have, after all, more than 61,000 readers!

Today’s Featured Reader is Douglas Swartzendruber (on the left in the picture), who sent a food-related photo and the caption below:

When thinking about favorite activities, many things came to mind from trail running [Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods] to basketball playing [still get in two nights a week] to acoustic jams with friends [a plug here for Colorado Roots Music Camp] to traveling, but the picture shows an activity that our family has enjoyed for over 70 years – barbecuing chicken.

On our northern Indiana farm, we raised corn, wheat and chicken – a lot of Leghorns, tens of thousands per year. The early bbqs were made out of oil drums cut in half, but the square-bottom ones shown are much more efficient with an even charcoal fire. The grills are stainless steel and make for easy turning of 20-25 halves per grill. For big events we would have up to 10 grills going. The sauce is a fairly simple mix of water, vinegar, butter, Worcestershire and seasonings, with the bbq technique being turning every minute or two with ample application of sauce after each turn. Another technique that is important – note that Slugger and I have our arms crossed in such a manner that we are turning the chicken in the same direction!

For those of you who know Slugger, he recently fell and broke a hip - supposedly chasing a raccoon or some such! He is in rehab at Waterford Crossing, and wife Ester is in the day-care Alzheimer's unit at Waterford.

Sorry to hear about Slugger's misfortune. He is quite a guy. Chickin' cookin' memories go way back to when your folks lived on the county road in New Paris. That's when they used the cut in half drums. They cooked the chicken in the driveway back then. Don't know when Slugger took it over. By the way, perhaps you as a knowledgeable biology professor, could shed some light on chicken "evolution." Your friend, Jerry Coyne, would say they came from dinosaurs.

Will try to get updates on Slugger's recovery and send them along. Yes, the switch from round bottoms to flat bottoms was a big advance in the bbq cookin' Not sure what to say about chicken evolution, other than there seems to be scientific consensus that chickens are dinosaurs!!

Thanks for the enlightenment! I always wondered why chicken tasted like dinosaur!

That was my thought as well - tasty!!

Mr. Biome - well, it should be since accepting evolution as a fact and not a religion is true whereas the BS peddled by the JWs is not. And don't try to baffle us with opinion put out by the farcical Discovery Institute which has not published any research regarding their intelligent design conjecture, and claim that engineers and physicians are scientists - har!

Don't know what you just said, but will keep trying to make sense of it. Lol!

There are many scientists who are not scientists at alI, but simple propagandists advancing a political agenda through a gross manipulation of the scientific method. I do not refer to physicists, chemists, and mathematicians, but those “scientists" in the area of psychology, sociology, climate change, and the most laughable of all, political “science.” Not to be left out are the evolutionary biologists, whose flight from reality probably exceeds the combined speed of the flights of the others. Thus, I predict, that one day the physical, chemical, mathematical, and logical truth of creation will catch up to the reality deniers, who must either accept that reality or become irrelevant, spouting their heresies like some deranged flat-earther.

Well, Nostra, I now certainly unnerstand the “dumbass” part of you’re name. Dint they ever teach you in school about primordal soups and how chemicals came together to form the building blocks of life? And how them mollycules became more and more complicated until they could reporduce theirselves? An from their, it was all downhill once that first cell was formed and revolved into everthing else. Like I say, Nostra, you are one big dumbass!

Nostradumbass said...

Hey, Hank. Are you THE Henry "Hank" Brownfinger that wrote "Who Goosed the Moose?" (A little juvenile humor there.) Anyway, not to worry, Hank. Your side is winning. Western Civilization is dying of stupidity.

Nostra - you disparage flat-earthers, but the Hebrew Bible makes it clear that the earth is flat!!

Nostradumbass said...

DES, does that mean a square flat earth, or a round, disk-shaped earth?

DES said...

Four corners suggests square

Nostradumbass said...

Isaiah 40:22 speaks of earth as a circle. “It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:” Some stretch the meaning of circle to mean sphere, but there’s not much basis for that. I conclude that the OT does not mention earth as a sphere, but at least a round “flat” earth.

NDA - check out this link, giving various relevant verses:

Also, there are many verses that talk about a dome over the earth to separate the land from the water - a very detailed article here: https://lockhaven.edu/~dsimanek/febible.htm

Thanks for the references! Trying to turn me into Nostrasmartass as opposed to Nostradumbass?

NDA - we're trying!
