As some of you know, the POTUS visited Planet Boulder yesterday - stepping from one skewed reality into another skewed reality [sorry for the scanned cartoon - could not find an online version]. Considering the extensive security measures, I made sure to stay as far away as possible from the CU campus. The only thing that I noticed was the rumbling of the helicopters transporting the Pres and his entourage into town. You can read the transcript of his speech here - focused on his campaign to keep student loan rates from doubling - sheesh, even Romney agrees with that one! Here are some quotes and items followed by my curmudgeonly commentary in bold:
Obama rocks CU [Boulder Daily Camera headline] - Duh - a liberal president on a liberal campus in a liberal town. And 'Rocks'? Reminded me of President Clinton rocking on his saxophone - I suppose that the POTUS can occasionally slip into the rock star mode, but I would prefer that they tend to pressing national and international issues. I want neither a rock star nor a beer-drinking buddy as President, much preferring an 'elite' who is a whole lot smarter and wiser than me and most everyone else.
"I heard a rumor that Robert Redford used to work there [The Sink]. Be nice to your server, because you never know where they'll end up." As if some actor is going to have an influence on my life! More seriously, it is important to always treat your server with respect regardless of where they might 'end up.'
"It's disgraceful to be a Democrat when you are young." Student at Boulder County Republican protest. I'm having a hard time following this logic -is it implied that it's not disgraceful to be a Democrat when you are old? I believe that the trend is the opposite - young Democrats become old Republicans [and young Republicans become old Teapartiers]
"Obama is pandering to college students." Vice chairwoman of the Colorado Hispanic Republicans. Somehow I doubt that she would use the same phraseology if Obama had given a speech targeted at Colorado Hispanics.
"College students are looking at the cold reality that they're going to have to graduate and get a job. Colorado Republican state chairman. This is something new? How inane.
Yogurt-gate at the Sink. Kolbi Zerbest has her 15 minutes of fame after spilling yogurt on Barry's pants. As one wag noted, the POTUS cleans yogurt off of his pants one leg at a time, just like the rest of us.
UC Boulder [what Obama called CU Boulder]. Of course he was not too far off, given the large number of students from California and the pitiful support for CU from the State of Colorado - less than 10% of the budget, heading toward 0 within a decade.
1,812 - the current number of US military deaths in Afghanistan. A number and a subject not mentioned in the speech. Of course, it's not college kids that are dying in Afghanistan.
Miscellaneous:
Loan rates a campaign non-starter, but not a non issue. Title of the Daily Camera Editorial.
Time in Boulder - 2 hours and 12 minutes
Length of Speech - 32 minutes
Motorcade - 20 SUVs and vans
Helicopters - 4 for the POTUS and press corps; one circling
Totally unrelated note - for the 13th time in the past 20 years, the CU triathlon team [combined women and men] won the National Championship.
