STANDING IN THE CIRCLE

Without any Nuggets, Avalanche and Rockies games taking place, I have been watching the news, Netflix and Circle TV.  I found Circle by accident - I got so irritated with satellite and cable companies having a pissing contest with Altitude Sports over broadcasting the local pro teams, I cut the cord as it were, signed up for YouTube TV and bought an antenna to put up on the old satellite mounting post on our garage roof.  We get about 40 broadcast channels, and Circle is one of them.  I have been most impressed with the live broadcasts from the Opry, with country's best playing to an empty auditorium because of COVID 19, but still sharing great music with us folks at home across the land.

In several of the Circle broadcasts, I was taken with how much respect and reverence was paid to the wooden circle that is in the center of the stage, as shown above.  A nice article on the history and the importance of the Circle can be found here.  Briefly, the circle was cut out of the stage of the old Ryman Auditorium and then placed in the stage at the Opry's new digs.  The Circle is considered "the most sacred space in country music" and "the circle never was painted, but it adorns the scuffs and scars of the greats and dreamers who have walked across it."

After hearing country artists and Opry Members such as Craig Morton, Daily & Vincent, Luke Combs and Ricky Skaggs and host Bobby Bones speak of the importance of the Circle, a strange thing happened - a song came to my mind!!  Strange in that it was only the second time that a tune just came to me.  I worked on it a bit, sent it to my brother in law who said "too many words", so I cut it back a bit, and am now happy with the song.  Below are the lyrics and the chord progression that I use.  If I had acceptable talent, I would make a demo, but alas, I will have to rely on others to do that. If you play, give it a shot, not too slow, not too fast. I welcome comments and ideas for improvements. Thanks in advance.

Update:  I indeed received some wonderful feedback on this, with some constructive guidance - so, I changed a few things around, and IMHO, the revised version below is significantly better.

STANDING IN THE CIRCLE

I had the perfect dream
that seemed like reality.
“Twas the sweetest of dreams
that ever could be.
I’m walkin' through the Ryman
with Opry's royalty,
  headin' for the Circle
in Nashville, Tennessee.

I walk onto the stage,
  guitar in my hand.
I'm standing at the microphone,
surrounded by a band.
There’s Hank and George and Patsy,
and other greats no longer seen,
gathered ‘round the Circle
in Nashville, Tennessee.

Oh the Circle, sacred Circle,
where the greatest ones have stood.
A simple six foot circle made out of common wood.
It’s the most majestic symbol,
of country’s royalty
who have stood in the Circle
in Nashville, Tennessee.

As the house lights go down,
a lump grows in my throat.
But we break into my song,
and we're hittin' every note.
The music flows like honey,
the band is heavenly.
We’re playing in the Circle
in Nashville, Tennessee.

And like so many dreams,
this one ended with a start.
But it brings a smile to my face
And a song rings in my heart
It’s etched into my memory
for all eternity
‘cause I was standing in the Circle
in Nashville, Tennessee.

Oh the Circle, sacred Circle,
where the greatest ones have stood.
A simple six foot circle made out of common wood.
It’s the most majestic symbol,
Of country’s royalty
who have stood in the Circle
in Nashville, Tennessee

[Closing in the tradition of the Grand Ole Opry]

Will the circle be unbroken,
By and by Lord, by and by.
There’s a better home awaiting
In the sky Lord in the sky.

PANCHO AND LEFTY

I love playing this song with friends.  Previous video disappeared....so

Living on the road my friend was gonna keep you free and clean
Now you wear your skin like iron and your breath's as hard as kerosene
You weren't your mama's only boy but her favorite one it seems
She began to cry when you said goodbye and sank into your dreams
Poncho was a bandit boy, his horse was fast as polished steel
He wore his gun outside his pants for all the honest world to feel
Poncho met his match you know on the deserts down in Mexico
Nobody heard his dyin' words ah but that's the way it goes
All the Federales say they could've had him any day
They only let him slip away out of kindness I suppose
Lefty he can't sing the blues all night long the way he used to
The dust that Poncho bit down south ended up in Lefty's mouth
Day they laid poor Poncho low Lefty split for Ohio
Where he got the bread to go there ain't nobody knows
All the Federales say they could've had him any day
They only let him slip away out of kindness I suppose
The poets tell how Poncho fell and Lefty's living in a cheap hotel
The desert's quiet and Cleveland's cold and so the story ends we're told
Poncho needs your prayers it's true but save a few for Lefty too
He only did what he had to do and now he's growing old

A few great Federales say could've had him any day
They only let him go so long out of kindness I suppose
A few great Federales say could've had him any day
They only let him go so long out of kindness I suppose

SHE'S GOT A WAY WITH WORDS

I have a backlog of topics to get to, so will start with a light-hearted one.  When I get tired of listening to oldies stations or NPR on the radio, I will switch to a country station for a change of pace.  Country is interesting for at least a while - songs are often funny and with many, one can sing along with the chorus by the time the song ends.  I heard this one recently, and it made me laugh.  Forgettable tune but humorous lyrics - I usually put the video first, but since this is about the words, they will be first.   Best line:  "She put a big F.U. in my future"

"She's Got A Way With Words"
Blake Shelton

When you put two and two together
You figure out love's got four letters
I shoulda known that when I met her
But she had to spell it out for me
After all that second guessing
It's been a long hard history lesson
Hell that's a class I got an F in
But now I understand perfectly

She put the her in hurt
She put the why in try
She put the S.O.B. in sober
She put the hang in hangover (hangover)
She put the ex in sex
She put the low in blow
She put a big F.U. in my future
Yeah she's got a way
She's got a way with words
Yeah she's got a way with words

Little words like "I" and "do"
Lying, cheating, screwed
Yeah all the words I thought I knew
They got a brand new meaning now

She put the her in hurt
She put the why in try
She put the S.O.B. in sober
She put the hang in hangover (hangover)
She put the ex in sex
She put the low in blow
She put a big F.U. in my future
Yeah she's got a way
She's got a way with words
(Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
Yeah she's got a way with words
(Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)

GOODBYE IN HER EYES

"Goodbye In Her Eyes"
I could tell that it was over
When her lips met mine
It was an emptiness in her voice
Hesitation when she smiled
She didn't have to say a word
It was just so plain to see
She had found what she'd been looking for
And I knew it wasn't me

I saw goodbye in her eyes
I don't think I can change it
There's no way to disguise
We will never make it

Sometimes I feel like a clown
Who can't wash off his make-up
The life she wanted ‒ it was gone
Prince Charming ‒ I wasn't
But I would trade a thousand Babylons
To be in her arms tomorrow
Oh, but like the tide her love has come and gone
And it's time for me to go

I saw goodbye in her eyes
I don't think I can change it
There's no way to disguise
We will never make it

Now she sees right through me

Should I hold on to what we've got
Is it just a waste of time?
One thing that I know for sure
I saw goodbye in her eyes

I saw goodbye in her eyes

I know you got somebody new now
All my candles have burned out
He's gonna love the way you shine
So did I
So don't smile at me it ain't what you mean
(Goodbye)

With that goodbye in your eyes
I know that I can't change it (now you see right through me)
There's no way to disguise
We will never make it

I saw goodbye in your eyes
I know that I can't change it (now you see right through me, goodbye in your eyes!)
Should I hold on
We will never make it (now you see right through me, goodbye in your eyes!)

Should I hold on
Is it just a waste of time?
One thing that I know for sure
I saw goodbye in your eyes
I saw goodbye in your eyes
I know that it's over

TRAVIS TRAVAILS/TRIUMPHS

I am not a big fan of country music, nor am I one who follows the comings and goings of the glitterati, but it was hard not to notice the troubles that country star Randy Travis has been having lately.  From a nasty divorce to an arrest for public intoxication to a DWI [with the very unflattering mug shot], Travis has been in the news.

However, these are not the focus of this post, but rather it is to highlight his talents.  Travis' performance at Pepperdine University was exceptional.  First, the sound folks truly understand how to maximize the acoustics of a country band in a relatively small venue.  Second, the talent, from Travis to each of the band members, was first-rate.  Third, there was little chit-chat between songs and the emphasis was clearly on the music.  An enjoyable evening was had by all.  Visit here for the top 10 Randy Travis songs - a few of good ones are below.
