OMG! How could a sane person part with all that stuff?
When we started cleaning out our Mother's house for the auction, we filled four four foot high roll-off dumpsters with stuff that could not be sold at auction. She and my Dad grew up and lived in a time when you didn't waste stuff or throw it away if it "still has some use in it" or "might come in handy some day."
Primo - we did an awful lot of recycling and made many trips to the Depot! Not enough trash for a dumpster, but the Tuesday trashman got his exercise! I believe that you are right on regarding growing up during the Depression. Mom had two dresses - one for school and one for Sunday, and I think that those days contributed a lot to her being a saver/collector.
My experience with "might come in handy someday" is that you save something for years before finally deciding to pitch it. Then a week later you find a need for it, but it's now forever gone. From that day forward you vow to NEVER throw anything away.

SSS - yes, a lot of stuff indeed. I will soon write about our 'lost month' - 30 solid days of sorting and packing.
Also, the Chupp auctioneers remind us that until things are sold, it is 'merchandise' - after that, call it what you will - junk, stuff, etc. Har
Holy cow!
Sicky - more appropriately, how could any sane person accumjulate all that stuff? :-)

PR - that has to be one of the fundamental laws of the universe - I certainly have had that experience!
