Okay, for those of you who don’t get it, the Higgs boson is called the “god” particle. Named after Peter Higgs, an Edinburgh University physicist, the Higgs boson is crucial to understanding the origin of mass. Shortly after the big bang, it is thought that many particles had no mass, but became heavy later on thanks to the Higgs field. Any particles that interact with this field are given mass. The Higgs boson is the signature particle of the field.

The Higgs field is a theoretical, invisible energy field that stretches throughout the universe. It clings to fundamental particles wherever they are, dragging on them and making them heavy. Some particles find the field more "sticky" than others. Particles of light – photons – are oblivious to it. Other particles have to wade through it like an elephant in tar. So, in theory, particles can weigh nothing, but as soon as the field switched on shortly after the big bang, they got their mass.

Its theistic nickname was coined by Nobel prizewinning physicist Leon Lederman, but Higgs himself is no fan of the label. "I find it embarrassing because, though I'm not a believer myself, I think it is the kind of misuse of terminology which I think might offend some people." According to Higgs, it wasn't even Lederman's choice to call it the god particle : "He wanted to refer to it as that 'g*ddamn particle' and his editor wouldn't let him."

And that, dear readers, is why they call me Bizzy Brain.

You might emphasize, Biz, that the particle has not been found yet.

Bizzy - thanks for living up to your name! Nice summary. I figured the nerds would get the joke, and others could look it up - but I appreciate your contribution. On a related note - the faster than light neutrino experiments were flawed, and that paradigm still stands.

More like a Bizzy Cut and Paster rather than a Bizzy Brain. It would take less than five minutes for someone who knows nothing about the topic to look it up, find an interesting article on it, then cut and paste three paragraphs into comments.

Now, now Phil. Dr S may use Turn It In for classroom plagiarism but I doubt that he uses it on his blog!

I predict we will need an Ark or something equivalent if the culture continues its descent into total decadence. Have you checked the bastard birth rate lately? Society will reach the point it can no longer sustain the dysfunction and we will end up third world or worse.

The Ark should be fireproof. Didn't God say something about destroying the world by fire the next time?

NDA - you are correct about the data regarding increases in out-of-wedlock birthrates. Seems like there have been numerous commentaries lately on this subject. Not quite as certain as you that this will lead to the end of the world as we know it :-) We can leave that to the Republicans!!

Also, no need for an ark is it's going to be fire, not flood. Guess I'll have to look into fire-resistant survival structures!
