CU - THE RISE, THE FALL

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/0XIeM3ede34/maxresdefault.jpg

After numerous dismal seasons, CU Football had a modestly successful run in the fall of 2016.  The were 10-4 overall, and 8-1 in the weak South Division of the PAC-12.  They got whupped by Washington in the PAC-12 Championship, 41-10.  They were invited to the Alamo Bowl and again got whupped, this time by Oklahoma State 38-8.  The Athletic Department as so head-over-heals with themselves that they put out a self-congratulatory commemorative tome called The Rise.  You too can have a copy for $39.95.

Most of us on the academic side of CU saw The Rise as The Ruse, intended to get the big donors and alumni all fired up to give more money to the Athletic Department.  Some of us [including yours truly] even opined that the 2016 season would be a flash in the pan.  A fellow named Jake Shapiro put it well in this article "Don't Expect the Rise to Continue at CU in 2017".  Well Jake, I and many other doubters were proven correct.  This season's Buffs were pretty much an embarrassment, winning 5 and losing 7, and winning only 2 PAC 12 games.  Needless to say, there was no bowling for this mediocre, at best, team.  Some of us are awaiting the Athletic Department's commemorative book for this year entitled "The Fall".

And now we'll move on the CU Men's Basketball season, which looks to be another over-hyped, underachieving gaggle of Boyle recruits.

TICKET TO RIDE - THE CARPENTERS

I recently watched one of those PBS/Colorado Public TV fundraisers that featured the Carpenters.   It was quite nostalgic, remembering their popular songs, and it also reminded me of how great Karen was.  Richard tends toward self-aggrandizement, and he did make some interesting arrangements, but it was Karen's voice that made them stars.  As the Wiki entry notes:  The Carpenters was an American vocal and instrumental duo of Karen (1950–1983) and Richard Carpenter (b. 1946). They produced a distinct soft musical style, combining Karen's contralto vocals with Richard's arranging and composition skills."  I was particularly struck with their rendition of the Beatles Ticket to Ride.  Turn it up and enjoy!

The version below is better audio quality and has very interesting still photos:

SHOULDER REPLACEMENT SURGERY

 https://www.hss.edu/images/corporate/ShoulderReplacementAnatomy.jpg

Posting has a been a bit light lately since I have been Rhonda's personal servant for a few weeks.  Some of you know that she recently received a new right shoulder, and the rehabilitation takes quite a while - e.g. she cannot drive until mid-December, and physical therapy is still limited motion.

So for those of you who might be interested, I found a video of shoulder replacement surgery - and - if you are at all squeamish about blood and gore, I highly recommend that you refrain from viewing!! 😊  It is quite amazing what orthopedic surgeons can accomplish, and that is probably why they are rewarded quite handsomely, eh Cousin Mark??

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED COVER JINX

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/34/Sports_Illustrated_cover_January_21_2002.jpg/200px-Sports_Illustrated_cover_January_21_2002.jpg

If I was a gambling man, I could have made some serious scratch betting on my analysis of the outcome of the World Series.  Some of you may know about the legendary jinx associated with being on the cover of Sports Illustrated - read about it here.  After the Astros won the series, there has been much hullabaloo about how Houston has forever ended the SI Cover Jinx, like here and here.

But these folks are completely missing the mark.  They are basing their claims on this cover from 2014:

https://timeincsecure-a.akamaihd.net/rtmp_uds/2157889318001/201710/3692/2157889318001_5622634259001_5622557037001-vs.jpg?pubId=2157889318001&videoId=5622557037001

However, this is a faulty analysis.  Yes, the Astros certainly overcame the 2014 Cover Jinx, but there was a much more damning cover for the Dodgers this year - this one:

https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/OVspyFSjawZt7HMyTo2cn8LcfQU=/410x0/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/56315611/dodgers-best-team-ever-sports-illustrated-cover-jonsoohoo.0.0.jpeg
It seems pretty clear to me that being proclaimed the Best Team Ever is much more of a jinx that simply predicting who might win the World Series [although it was quite prescient].  The two fellows on the cover would probably agree that they under-performed in the Series.

NICK OF TIME

From Bonnie Raitt - one of the GOATs IMHO.  Previous Raitt post here.

Guitarist Bonnie on Keyboard

A friend of mine she cries at night
And she calls me on the phone
Sees babies everywhere she goes
And she wants one of her own
She's waited long enough she says
And still she can't decide
Pretty soon she'll have to choose and it tears her up inside
She's scared, scared she'll run out of time

I see my folks, they're getting old
And I watch their bodies change
I know they see the same in me
And it makes us both feel strange
No matter how you tell yourself
It's what we all go through
Those lies are pretty hard to take
When they're staring' back at you
Scared to run out of time

When did the choices get so hard?
With so much more at stake
Life gets mighty precious
When there's less of it to waste
Scared to run out of time

Just when I thought I'd had enough
And all my tears were shed
No promise left unbroken
There were no painful words unsaid
You came along and showed me
How to leave it all behind
You opened up my heart again
And then much to my surprise
I found love, baby
Love in the nick of time

I found love, darling
Love in the nick of time

I found love, baby
Love in the nick of time

DRAFT DODGER DONALD

Time to stir the pot a bit, and hopefully start a national movement [a tad overly optimistic??]  One of Trump's favorite tactics for engaging his adversaries is to give them a disparaging nickname.  Regardless of the level of truth, it has been highly effective.  Lyin' Ted and Crooked Hilary are two of his pejoratives that helped him vanquish both Cruz and Clinton.  So, I think that it is time to pull the turnabout-is-fair-play gambit.

DRAFT DODGER DONALD

Read a detailed account of Trump's dodging here.

Some quotes from the article linked above:

"But in 1968, when he was a 22-year-old University of Pennsylvania graduate, Trump was a tall, fit athlete who played football, tennis, and golf. His age and clean medical history qualified Trump as a perfect candidate for the draft to serve in the United States Army and fight in the Vietnam War, but he avoided combat after receiving a 1-Y medical deferment, which he has said was due to "bone spurs in his heels." "

Trump in Middle

As a draft dodger, Trump never knew the horrors of war, but in 1997, he laughed when telling radio host Howard Stern that avoiding sexually transmitted diseases was like his "personal Vietnam." "It is a dangerous world out there. It’s scary, like Vietnam. Sort of like the Vietnam era,” Trump said to Stern, discussing his sex life. "I feel like a great and very brave soldier.”

https://i.imgur.com/flJH7br.jpg

"Unlike the 2,709,918 soldiers who fought in Vietnam, Trump never served. He wasn't injured like the 304,000 Americans who fought in the war, or among the more than 58,000 killed in combat. Despite this inexperience, he is now in charge of the U.S. armed forces, the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the Coast Guard, and the Marine Corps as commander-in-chief. As president, he is tasked with dictating to all military generals and admirals which battles should be fought, where they should be fought, and who gets to fight in them on behalf of the United States."

Trump is just another in a very long list of "chicken hawks" - folks who talk the tough talk but did not walk the walk when it came to giving two years of their lives to the USA.   To see a list of such pussies [not in the Trump sense of the word] visit here.

COYOTES - DON EDWARDS

Was a cowboy I knew in south Texas,
His face was burnt deep by the sun,
Part history, part sage, part mesquit,
He was there when Poncho Villa was young.
And he'd tell you a tale of the old days,
When the country was wild all around,
Sit out under the stars of the Milky Way,
And listen while the coyotes howl.
And they go... hoo yip hoo yip hoo
hoodi hoo di yip hoo di yip hoo
hoo yip hoo yip hoo
hoo di hoo di yip hoo di yip hoo

Now the long horns are gone,
And the drovers are gone,
The Comanches are gone,
And the outlaws are gone,
Geronimo is gone,
And Sam Bass is gone,
And the lion is gone,
And the red wolf is gone.

Well he cursed all the roads and the oil men,
And he cursed the automobile,
Said this is no place for an hombre like I am,
In this new world of asphalt and steel.
Then he'd look off some place in the distance,
At something only he could see,
He'd say all that's left now of the old days,
Those damned old coyotes and me.
And they go hoo yip hoo yip hoo
hoodi hoo di yip hoo di yip hoo
hoo yip hoo yip hoo
hoo di hoo di yip hoo di yip hoo

Now the long horns are gone,
And the drovers are gone
The Comanches are gone
And the outlaws are gone,
Now Quantro is gone,
Stan Watie is gone
And lion is gone,
And the red wolf is gone.

One morning they searched his adobe,
He disappeared without even a word,
But that night as the moon crossed the mountain,
One more coyote was heard.
And he'd go, hoo yip hoo yip hoo
hoodi hoo di yip hoo di yip hoo
hoo yip hoo yip hoo
hoo di hoo di yip hoo di yip hoo
hoo yip hoo yip hoo
hoodi hoo di yip hoo di yip hoo
hoo yip hoo yip hoo
hoo di hoo di yip hoo di yip hoo

TOTALITY

https://www.universetoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/2016-Total-Solar-Eclipse-700x432.jpg

I traveled to Wyoming to view the total eclipse of the sun.  Rhonda had been camping for several days and was not up for another road trip!  I drove up to Laramie the evening before - got in touch with nephew David for a beer, and he suggested a place for viewing that would likely be less crowded.  I had planned on taking the back road to Casper, but the route I took was the back way to Douglas.  It was a dirt road called Fetterman that headed north shortly beyond Rock River.  David thought that it would be about 45 minutes to the area of totality, but it turned out to be about twice that. However, it was worth it.

There were dozens of cars along Fetterman Road, and as the terrain turned from plains to canyons, there were numerous pull-off sites where people were gathering.  I saw one open area where about a half dozen cars had gathered, and decided to stop.  Got wonderfully lucky!!  A fellow from Texas had brought his 12 inch telescope and some modified binoculars for the viewing.  The 20 or so folks at the site were treated to some wonderful images along with the views through our glasses and the transition from day time to darkness.

I watched through my glasses and saw the progression shown above.  As totality approached, the air started to cool, and I went from comfortable in short sleeves to needing my hooded sweat shirt!  The bright blue sky began to lose its color, and transformed to a dusky gray.  All of the colors took on an other-worldly hue - not unlike when the sun is being partially blocked by smoke from forest fires, but still different from anything I had ever seen.  At totality, I had my binoculars ready to go, and the view was just as shown above.  However, I immediately noted a star adjacent to the sun/moon, and from the map below, it was Regulus, one of the stars in Orion's Belt.  Solar flares were also plain to see.  Venus appeared early on and was easily identified, and various other planets and stars came into view.  The two and a half minutes of totality passed way too quickly, but to use an overworked word - Awesome!!  As the total eclipse ended, the crowd broke out into spontaneous applause, and folks began to gather up for the trek home, knowing that traffic would be a zoo.  Fortunately I took the 'back' way home to Colorado and avoided the traffic-jam-from-hell along Interstate 25.

The next total eclipse in the US is in seven years, and the path is shown below - I highly recommend making the effort to take it in - I don't think that you will be disappointed.

TWENTY FIFTH AMENDMENT

Littwin: Is Donald Trump crazy or is he just Donald Trump? | SummitDaily.com

I believe that it is time for Pence and the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Section 1. In case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President.

Section 2. Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.

Section 3. Whenever the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, and until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary, such powers and duties shall be discharged by the Vice President as Acting President.

Section 4. Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.

GENTLE ON OUR MINDS

Glen Campbell - 1936-2017.  Obituaries here and here. I was volunteering at the Colorado Roots Music Camp at RMMC when we got the news of Campbell's death.  It seemed as though everyone there from the professional musician-instructors to the the music campers had a Glen story [mine was published in a previous post here].  Although Campbell had many famous hits, I am posting below one of his less-mentioned hits - this is prompted by the tribute to Glen given by the Music Camp organizer Charlie Hall.  Charlie and another master musician Louis Mock gave a goose-bump inducing rendition of Gentle on My Mind.  The video shows his masterful guitar playing, and the audience is an impressive group as well!

It's knowin' that your door is always open
And your path is free to walk
That makes me tend to leave my sleepin' bag
Rolled up and stashed behind your couch
And it's knowin' I'm not shackled
By forgotten words and bonds
And the ink stains that have dried upon some line
That keeps you in the back roads
By the rivers of my memory
That keeps you ever gentle on my mind

It's not clingin' to the rocks and ivy
Planted on their columns now that bind me
Or something that somebody said because
They thought we fit together walkin'
It's just knowing that the world
Will not be cursing or forgiving
When I walk along some railroad track and find
That you're movin' on the back roads
By the rivers of my memory
And for hours you're just gentle on my mind

Though the wheat fields and the clothes lines
And the junkyards and the highways come between us
And some other woman's cryin' to her mother
'Cause she turned and I was gone
I still might run in silence
Tears of joy might stain my face
And the summer sun might burn me till I'm blind
But not to where I cannot see
You walkin' on the back roads
By the rivers flowin' gentle on my mind

I dip my cup of soup back from a gurglin' cracklin' cauldron
In some train yard
My beard a rustlin' coal pile
And a dirty hat pulled low across my face
Through cupped hands 'round a tin can
I pretend to hold you to my breast and find
That you're waitin' from the back roads
By the rivers of my memory
Ever smilin', ever gentle on my mind

CHRISTIANITY TODAY?

This poem may rankle some folks, but I found it to be thought-provoking and truthful in many ways. The poem and comments can be found here.

THE EXODUS

by

Dave Barnhart

I have seen your religion, and I hate it.
I have heard your doctrine, and I loathe it.
Take away your empty praise songs,
your vacuous worshiptainment.
Your mouth is full of religious words,
but your proverbs are salted manure.

“The sick deserve to be sick.
The poor deserve to be poor.
The rich deserve to be rich.
The imprisoned deserve to be imprisoned.”
Because you never saw him sick, or poor, or in prison.

“If he had followed police instructions,
if he had minded the company he keeps,
he would not have been killed,”
You say in the hearing
of a man hanging on a cross
between two thieves.

“People who live good lives
do not have pre-existing conditions,” you say,
carving these words over the hospital door:
“Who sinned, this man or his parents,
that he was born blind?”

“It is the church’s job, not the government’s,”
say you fat sheep,
defending your fat shepherds,
shoving and butting with shoulders and horns,
while you foul the water,
grass,
and air,
and scatter the hungry sheep.

You watch the melting glaciers and say to the waves of the sea,
“this far shall you come, and no farther,”
as if your will could change the weather,
as if your will could be done in the heavens as it is on this earth,
as if you could drill the sky the way you drill the soil.

In your telling,
in the story of the starving of the five thousand,
there are not twelve baskets collected of left-over food;
In your story, God’s abundance becomes scarcity,
and the crowds devour each other.
“Send them into the villages to buy food,”
and let the Invisible Hand’s miracle of the free market sort them out,
the worthy from the unworthy,
while you eat the two fish and five pieces of bread
volunteered by a child.
These ungrateful poor,
the welfare queens
with their anchor babies,
stop before your disciples’ raised palms;
they hear you say,
“The Master cannot be bothered to bless your children.”

You see Hannah drunk,
and you jail her for fetal endangerment.

Like Haman, you hide behind the skirts of the king;
you make laws and pay bribes
that allow vigilante violence
and private discrimination
against those you hate,
sheltering underneath plausible deniability.
“It’s not a Muslim ban,” you say one day.
“It’s about religious liberty,” you say another.

This Bible you wave, this word you claim,
it is sharper than any two-edged sword.
You wield it poorly; it slices you on the backstroke.
You know neither the scriptures nor the power of God.
You tie up heavy yokes for others
whose burdens you do not bear,
but you will not lift a finger to help them.
To some you say, “Do not marry, but burn.”
You lock them out of the kingdom of God.
You cross sea and land for your missionary work,
and teach others to be as hateful as you.

Your kingdom is not the public park of Zechariah,
where children play in the streets
and old men and women lean on their canes for very age.
It is not the land where every fearless household
has its own vine and fig tree,
their own means of production and shade for their rest.
It is not the land where everyone has a home.
Your kingdom is the one with gates,
where homeless beggars have their sores licked by dogs,
where people who have the audacity to grow old
pay a premium for their insolence.
Like Ahab, you covet all the vines, all the fig trees,
letting your domain stretch as far as your eye can see,
adding house to house and field to field
until, in your gentrified land
there is room for no one but you and yours.
Like Pharaoh, you call those who refuse you “Lazy, lazy.”
You build walls, and walls, and walls, and walls,
and you stuff your ears to the sound of protest songs
that will shake those walls down.

I have seen your christ, and he is my antichrist.
He is the herald of a violent god,
a god of fertility but not fruitfulness,
a god of embryos but not emancipation, pro-birth and anti-life,
a god of war and retribution but not of justice,
a god of order but not of peace,
a god of might but not of mercy,
a god of marriage but not of love,
a god of sex but not of pleasure,
a god of platitudes but not of wisdom,
a god of work but not of sabbath,
a god who demands sacrifice from the poor but luxury and reward for Pharaoh.

Your religion is the religion of pyramids pointed heavenwards,
towers built to reach the heavens.
Supported by their flat base, built by slave labor,
they are stable monuments to wealth and death.
You fill their secret rooms with gold so that
in the afterlife,
you may cross to paradise
on the backs of the oppressed,
and live in forgetful pleasure for eternity.
Your gilded gospel is rusty ruin.

You are why the ancient Hebrews
seldom talked about an afterlife,
weary as they were of working
for Egypt’s dead heaven.
Your idols and your religion
are why those slaves left the yoke of heaven,
the land of binding,
for a wide wilderness,
for a nameless, faceless God
who told them they—even they—
were made in God’s image.
You are why your churches are empty
of those who love and believe in freedom.
You are why the Gentiles blaspheme the name of God.
You are the reason for the Exodus.

And if you pursue, may God throw you into the sea.
And the horse you rode in on.

ISLAMOPHOBIA?

I think not.  What most of us worry about are the crazies of any stripe who believe that it is their duty to kill those who do not believe as they do or disobey their "law".  And it seems clear to me that Islam has a much higher percentage of adherents who believe that murder is their calling, bringing honor and glory to their prophet, god and themselves.  I copy below a recent comment by reader BES, and simply say hear, hear.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE:

Since this string of postings, we've seen sustained, if not elevated European terror attacks, now being met with sympathy for the nation of islam and fears that it may be offended by any accusatory remarks. “Islamaphobia” is suddenly part of the auto-response lexicon.

This, in spite of the fact that the islamic state claims responsibility for these actions. Tons of hypocrisy outpouring from every corner, including elitist celebrities who espouse "peace, love and no walls" spewed from...behind fortified walls.

Bear in mind that 90% of terrorism is muslim on muslim. But that ranks up there with the ubiquitous Vietnam body counts we heard on the CBS nightly news. I have tried, unsuccessfully in the past, to engage any muslims on their rank and file silence over the wholesale slaughter of non-believers. Crickets.

My college roommate, also a journalist by trade, recently did a Ted Talk on what we’re all really selling these days: Hope and Fear. Hope for something better, vs. Fearing something worse. In the case of islam, it’s entirely fear based. Fear of not going to heaven. Fear of irking allah. Fear of being stoned, beheaded or maimed for the slightest infraction. The irony of putting Saudi Arabia on the human rights panel at the UN does not escape me.

Is it any wonder that a handful of ruthless barbarians, barely armed, can blow into any sandbox on abandoned American military vehicles, terrorize the populace into submission, leave and return only to find them just as submissive? That is fear at the cult level. Is islam nothing more than a deranged cult?

My fear is that when we finally wake up and realize religion is not a race and we’re not racists for opposing a fear based cult that has openly and repeatedly declared war on all non-believers, it will be too late. Orlandos and San Bernardinos will be our new normal. Those events were just the demo. The full feature is due out any moment.

We were told decades ago who the enemy is and advised to prepare. But we didn’t. Too distracted by bread and circuses. And marshaled forward on decades of bad and failed foreign policy. Also, the irony of refugees fleeing bombed out cities and countries, seeking better conditions…would only appear to be more savages seeking intact buildings and fresh victims to destroy. Any guesses as to why a significant portion of refugees seem to be men of fighting age, 18-34?

Good fences make good neighbors. Just like solid doors make restful nights.

SUFCO MINE - UTAH

We have made the Denver-LA trek quite a few times, taking I-70 and I-15.  Each time that we pass through central Utah, I would note a sudden appearance of these trucks on the Interstate 70:

Barney Trucking | GilaValleyCentral.Net

It took me a while to figure out that the BT was for Barney Trucking, and that the trucks were making their appearance around the Convulsion Road interchange east of Salina, UT.  Since it wasn't clear what they were trucking, I got on Google Maps to see if there was any evidence of mining in the area.  I thought that maybe there would be open pit mining of some sort, but none showed up.  However, there was a marker for the Sufco  Mine.  Turns out that the Sufco is a huge underground coal mine, and the trucks were carrying coal west to power plants.  Here is the blurb from the Sufco web site:

The Sufco mine, which derives its name from its former owner, Southern Utah Fuel Co is one of the longest continuously running and most productive underground longwall mines in the U.S. It has been in continuous operation since 1941, initially as a room-and-pillar coal mine and since 1985 as a high-performance longwall operation.

The Sufco mining complex is located in Sevier County, UT approximately 30 miles north east of Salina, UT and 125 miles south of Salt Lake City, UT. It is located in the Blackhawk Formation in the Wasatch Plateau coalfield in which eight coal beds have been identified that contain coal seams more than seven feet thick.

MALIBU'S PINK LADY

Whenever we head out on a road trip, I see things that I should write about; so it's time to catch up a bit.  Here's something I did not see, but it's a legend around Malibu.  We often drive through the tunnel and it is easy to see where the painting was, and how difficult it must have been to paint.  A large picture of the Lady graces one of the wall at a local pub, Tavern One on PCH.

The Pink Lady was a short-lived painting on a rock face near Malibu, California in 1966. The painting was created by Lynne Seemayer (1936-2017), a paralegal from Northridge, California and depicted a 60-foot (18m) tall, nude woman in a running position.

The painting was located on the rock face above the southern entrance of the tunnel on Malibu Canyon Road near Malibu. For some time, the rock face above the tunnel had been covered with graffiti, which Seemayer felt was "an eyesore". Working at night, she began removing the graffiti in January 1966, using ropes to suspend herself in front of the rock. When the rock was clean, she created the painting on the night of Friday, October 28, 1966.

By November 1, the painting had begun to attract local news coverage. It was dubbed the "Pink Lady" by the media, due to the pink paint used for the skin. Los Angeles County road officials, concerned about traffic problems the painting might cause, attempted to remove it with high-pressure spray from fire hoses, and then with paint stripper However, Seemayer had used heavy-duty house paint for her creation, and both methods failed to remove it.

When she realized that her work was in danger, Seemayer publicly admitted to creating the Pink Lady, and sought a court injunction. This failed, however, and on November 3 a road crew covered the painting with brown paint.

Seemayer sued the county for $1,000,000 for the destruction of her work, and the county counter-sued for $28,000 in removal costs. Since the painting was on private property, both cases were dismissed by the court. For some time after the painting was removed, Seemayer received hate mail and phone calls from people who felt the work was obscene, including threats of violence against her and her children. She also received a few offers from art galleries to show her work.
The image was used as a wine label.

WAGON WHEEL

Feel free to crank it up and sing along!

Heading down south to the land of the pines
I'm thumbing my way into North Caroline
Staring up the road and pray to God I see headlights
I made it down the coast in seventeen hours
Picking me a bouquet of dogwood flowers
And I'm a-hopin' for Raleigh, I can see my baby tonight

So rock me momma like a wagon wheel
Rock me momma any way you feel
Hey, momma rock me
Rock me momma like the wind and the rain
Rock me momma like a south bound train
Hey, momma rock me

I'm running from the cold up in New England
I was born to be a fiddler in an old time string band
My baby plays a guitar, I pick a banjo now
Oh, north country winters keep a-getting me down
Lost my money playing poker so I had to leave town
But I ain't turning back to living that old life no more

So rock me momma like a wagon wheel
Rock me momma any way you feel
Hey, momma rock me
Hey, rock me momma like the wind and the rain
Rock me momma like a south bound train
Hey, momma rock me

Walkin' to the south out of Roanoke
Caught a trucker out of Philly had a nice long toke
But he's a heading west from the Cumberland gap
To Johnson City, Tennessee
And I gotta get a move on before the sun
I hear my baby calling my name and I know that she's the only one

And if I die in Raleigh at least I will die free

So rock me momma like a wagon wheel
Rock me momma any way you feel
Hey, momma rock me
Oh, rock me momma like the wind and the rain
Rock me momma like a south bound train
Hey momma rock me

Oh, so rock me momma like a wagon wheel
Rock me momma any way you feel
Hey, momma rock me (mama rock me, mama rock me)
Rock me momma like the wind and the rain
Rock me momma like a south bound train

Hey, ey yeah momma rock me (you can rock me, rock me)

THE TAX MAN COMETH

With tax day just around the corner for many of us, I found the data regarding who pays what for income taxes to be quite interesting.  First, looking at this chart, you will see that the top 1% of income folks pay almost 40% of income taxes, and the top 20% pay nearly 95% of all taxes.  Notice that the bottom 40% receive a portion of the taxes rather than paying.

Here is the actual dollar breakdown [with some discrepancies from above chart]:

Next is another look at the income tax data.  A whopping 45% of households pay no income tax.

And who are these folks who don't pay income tax?

And lastly, where does it all go?  [this is pre-Trump who proposes to increase one of the biggest players while decimating some of the smallest players]

ALONE BUT NOT LONELY

 Alone…but not lonely | Heavenlyjava

I recently re-read a reflection [I'll call it a poem] that a friend sent to me a number of years ago.  He has stood strong against a variety of challenges, including the way-too-early loss of his wife to cancer.  Some of you may find the poem dark, but I find it thought-provoking, and in it, many things  to which I can relate.  My suggestion is to read it aloud, and then let me know what you think.

I walk every morning at 3:30 am out my back door, through the pastures over the fence and down Bar X road. It heads straight north. I walk that stretch (4.4 miles) 7 days a week at the same time every morning. It teaches me brutal wind and fierce cold and sometimes driving snow and ice and, how these are places where the hearts of men sometimes go.

It reminds me how very alone I am.
Alone but not lonely.

A choice I have made and a price I pay when I am misunderstood.
These days seem to stretch into an eternity of highway.
I love the highway just as I love the forest. It never gives up.
It humbles my arrogance.

This thing at work, it is so far away from me when I am home with my family, or when I'm cutting wood or walking on Bar X.

Why so many feel obligated to fear the wanderer I think I know.
They fear the freedom of being alone and what they perceive it must do to your fortress of the soul.

As Lent falls on this dark night I feel alone but not abandoned.
I feel love of life all the more when things get bad.

I will survive.

We (my little family without a wife or mother)...will survive.
That's all that matters
It's a comfort to know there is a rationality to emotion.

John Lennon said it with clarity:

"Love is all you need"

CHUCK BERRY

https://cdn1.nyt.com/images/2014/09/13/arts/berry-chuck-adv-obit-slide-W3AH/berry-chuck-adv-obit-slide-W3AH-videoSixteenByNine1050.jpg

You can find plenty of write-ups about Chuck Berry and his death at age 90, such as here and here.  However, one lesser known fact about Berry was mentioned in this article:

There was a also a darkness and suspicion in Berry, for those who cared to look.  He was notorious for making concert promoters pay him in full before his shows, cash only.....Years later he was convicted of tax evasion.

I learned about his concert scam a long time ago when he was brought in to perform at the Elkhart County Fair.  One of our friends was on the fair board, and the board had caught wind of Berry's tactic.  So, shortly before going on stage, Berry demanded more money or else, no show.  The board had a check made out for the sum requested - Berry went on to perform, but the board had the check cancelled immediately.  I never did hear of any consequences, so Berry must have chalked it up to being scammed on his scam.

THE OLD HOME PLACE

Every year the Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp hosts a Men's Retreat, and one of the best parts is the music.  We sing everything from a capella hymns to bluegrass to roots to rock and roll.  There are so many songs that deserve attention, but here is one that I particularly enjoyed this year since we had guitars, mandolins, banjo, and bass.

BARRACUDA

Barracuda - the fish, the car, the song, the ride, the gun, the hockey team, the airplane, the bicycles, the swim wear, and I am sure there are more......

I have only seen these at an aquarium

A great song by Heart

I cannot find a picture of the Barracuda ride, but it was a very popular attraction at the Elkhart County Fair back in the day - rode around fast in wavy circles with the music blasting.

Barracuda guns - don't own any 😆
